The guys at Spectral Instruments are really inventive. Along their more than 20 years in creative business they have developed and built several cooled high-end CCD camera systems. Their new project is even more astounding, a 112 Megapixel camera!
Spectral is on route to create a custom version from their 1110 series, a B/W camera that sports a huge 95X95mm sensor. Just to compare, a medium format sensor would measure around 48X36mm and a popular dSLR crop sensor would be 24X16mm. The -100ºC cooled sensor is able to survive very long exposure times – like 4h! – without overheating and has no anti-aliasing filter to make extra-sharp pictures.
The development of this sensor should cost something close to a whooping US$100 thousand. Despite the immense cost, the company claims the camera will go to the hands of some lucky and competent pro photographers, for some real world usage. Spectral is taking hints for which Pros should get the once in a lifetime chance. If you have any suggestion you can send to zeke@specinst.com.
