At least it has been released! After lots of speculation and rumors, the long expected and well spoken D600 is official. The specs are exactly as rumored and I will not enter much on this area, you can read what has already been published here.
A summary of what will hit the shelves on September 18, 2012:
- 24,3 Megapixel Full Frame sensor
- 39 points AF system
- 760g without batteries
- ISO from 100-6400 (expandable to 50-25600, if you dare)
- Dual SD card slots (SDXC and UHS-I support)
- in camera HDR
- Multi-area Full HD D-Movie with uncompressed video stream to external recorders
I loved this bold move from Nikon, bringing down the artificial price barrier to the Full Frame gear. It looked like FX cameras were expensive just because their buyers where willing to pay more, but this might be over now. Although I must confess that I am a little disappointed on the price tag, which came a little higher than expected at US$ 2,099.95, which is just US$800 more than I just cashed for my extraordinary D800.
The blessings:
- The smallest and lightest Full Frame from Nikon ever
- Cheaper than any other FX body in the market so far (and probably for a while)
- Weather sealed and tough-built
- almost all the bells and whistles expected in a Full Fram
- Spectacular uncompressed video output (a huge plus for videomakers)
- Nice new AF system
The curses:
- Price – I would have loved to see this go down a tad more, probably closer to US$1,600
- Lack of a Sync Jack – if you need one this is a deal breaker, as the alternative might cost over US$3000
- Flash Sync Speed – this was brought down to 1/200th of a second and surprised some people. In very short terms this means Nikon lost their old capacity to boost flashes, as their equipment would allow speeds of up to 1/500th of a second.
Despite all the issues, this is surely a very nice gear and – hopefully – the first of an entire new DSLR segment, the cheaper Full Frames. If this turns out to be true, the recent tendency of somewhat lower prices (the D800 can be found for under US$2,900) might be forced even lower.
