This is all the way an opposite to what we read yesterday about the dangers of shooting wild gorillas. The videos I bring to you today show a lot of the glamour behind the cool photographer’s life many crave, but without forgetting the hard work to get there and the “occupational hazards”.
If you ever got dazzled by any surf picture, there is a big chance this guy had something to do with it: Zak Noyle. The two videos below are part of a documentary called Momentum that shows successful people’s life trajectory.
Zak’s life has somethings that really impressed. Despite his early interest for water and the family support, what kept me thinking more is the way he took his father’s passion and profession (he is also a pro photographer) and didn’t just follow his steps. Zak learned and evolved, taking his own path and developing it in such a way he could put all he loved together, photography and water.

Full of drooling stories of a well developed photographer career and amazing water shots, it is also cool to check the gear he takes to work. Different from what I am used to load up before some underwater shots, his gear is much simpler and yet too powerful. A compact underwater housing for a huge Canon beast, no fancy enormous lens, a helmet and flippers. That ought to give him even more freedom than we feel as diving photographers or videomakers. It is pure joy to watch him working and having fun at the same time, while he captures jaw-dropping images between one colossal wave and the next.
Maybe you are not really into surfing, just as me. I still recommend you watch the two parts of the video just because they are also about passion, following a path that you can create to yourself and preparing yourself to make the best out of it. Inspirational, to say the least.
