This is a nice video with lots of useful tips on how to setup and perform an on location shooting for business portraits.
Don’t get too overwhelmed by the bunch of techy and expensive gear the guy uses, you can easily replace them using some knowledge and a lot of creativity. Among the replacement list you might consider, if available:
- a window that allows sunlight to come in. If the light is too harsh you may use curtains (if available and clear enough) or use some sort of blanket or white tissue to soften the light
- speedlights: these are immensely versatile tools and I really recommend you to get at least one. If cash is not an issue, consider going a little further with 2 or 3 of them. They are portable, controllable and very easy to set up
- any other light sources available. Maybe there is a table lamp, flashlight, projector or even car headlights around (just kidding! or not?), but the important part is first to think what you need the light to do and then consider what can you use to make it happen
- consider if the extra light can come from a reflecting surface, such as a white board, foam, white blanket, mirror or whatever you can get your hands on.
With this replacements in mind, watch the video and think about the lights’ placement and the effect they bring to the portrait.
Want to play around with the possibilities? There is a very nice – although frightening to some – online free app that allows you can play with lighting and check the results. Try it here
