Grüetzi Galera!
It is mind-blowing how fast all goes by, we are about to enter autumn and Santa Claus is getting ready to send 2020 to the craziest pages of history. While the end doesn’t come (of the year, nothing else ?), we still have plenty of time to enjoy and exercise those photography muscles.
You can see the full recording of our online meeting below and download the presentation we discussed here.
On the agenda this time:
- Industry News:
- 00:56 Samyang released a lens simulator that, despite still being a little buggy, can help understand the effects of focal length, distance and much more on your photos.
- 04:16 ON1 released an AI-powered portrait editor software that promises a lot. I’ll test it and show the results in our next Tuesday Photo CHat.
- 04:16 Capture One Pro 20 is on sale, TKS Deryk for this tip!
- 10:45 Free Sigma 45mm f/2.8 if you purchase a Panasonic Lumix S5. This is actually an offer from Panasonic, so you can benefit from it using your favourite seller.
- FREE Learning and Videos (documentaries, videos, fun and educational sources)
- 19:53 I’ve been trying to bring some “outsider” influences on my life, moving away from the beaten western path. Currently, I’ve been looking to Japan for inspiration:
- 20:58 Ishiuchi Miyako Interview – an amazing street photographer
- 25:29 The Art of Moriyama Daido – an incredibly influential and important photographer with a lifetime of teaching to share.
- 32:12 Improve Portrait Photography – a comprehensive video that goes all around the subject, although with is selling bias from a gear merchant. Great tips and suggestions targeted to the members of our group who have been telling me they need more experience and knowledge to photograph people.
- 33:12 Creative Long Exposures – Our Photowalks will soon happen in the night and this long exposure subject has already come up on our last Tuesday CHat. This is a very interesting video showing some ideas and how-to’s that we can put to practice
- 34:24 Long Exposure Photography Guide – Another nice video showing some how-to’s but also with special attention on how to use this technique on cityscapes. Let’s apply this on our next Photowalk already!
- 35:05 Tips for BW Photography – Another tip that is still focused on our Photowalks, as B/W go so well with high ISO and street photography.
- 35:54 Street Photography Tips – Some of the tips here are extremely basic, but other ideas might inspire some of our members to try something new as we wonder through the streets of Zürich in our free photowalks.
- 37:10 Capture One Pro – ok, this is arguably the future of photo editing and tethered shooting and many of us want to “evolve” to it. If you need some help in the process you can check countless tutorials, but don’t forget to peak these:
- Capture One’s own channel has a lot to offer
- Ted Forbes is a great instructor and has dedicated hours of videos to show how to operate Capture One.
- 19:53 I’ve been trying to bring some “outsider” influences on my life, moving away from the beaten western path. Currently, I’ve been looking to Japan for inspiration:
We meet weekly at 19:00 CEST to our Tuesday Photo CHats, you can see/download the PDF presented during the meeting and watch the full recording on Facebook and Youtube (on Youtube there are links to each specific section of the video). Video Recording of the Meeting
The Main Topics
OUR BOOK
Sorry for the all caps title, but this project is very dear to me and I hope most of us will take part in it.
We will produce a book-magazine with the photos we took during/for our activities during 2020 and preserve some good memories from this crazy and unforgettable year. Regardless if it was a photo from the #lockdown assignments or from the photowalks, we will collect and select some of the gems we produced during this year and produce a book, which should be ready in December. With the book ready, we will get together to see it and celebrate the good times we had during this year’s tough ride.
We have been CHatting about this for some meetings now and it is better to check the video recording above to get the most details, but here is a very poor summary:
- Photos taken in 2020
- Sections
- Photographers
- Group Info
- Our 2020 Photos
- Final Thoughts
- Each participant will have an Introduction double-page and 4 more pages to showcase her/his photos (2 x double pages)
Next Free Photowalk in Zürich
As it has already become a tradition, we get together on the last Tuesday of each month to have fun, meet new and old friends and have a blast while shooting some pictures. Join us and dust-off that poor camera sitting in a cabinet!
You can find the details and RSVP on our Meetup page. The fine details will come as soon as the weather forecast is more reliable.
Escape Room Photowalk
Thanks Daniel Tscharner for making this a possibility!
As some people from our groups always said the usual Photowalks were too busy to enjoy and photograph models, I came up with a new version that will coexist with the free photowalk. For this special version, I will limit the number of photographers and I will make sure we have a great models/photographer ratio, as well as keeping track of all permits and model releases. For all this work I will have to charge a very, but really very tiny fee, all details will be explained once we have settled the needed arrangements with the Escape Room.
The Venue where we will try to make this Photowalk is amazing and provides not only a huge area only for us but also many different rooms in which we can set different lighting and make many sets of gorgeous photos. Even if you cannot join the group, I strongly recommend that you go to Boda Borg and indulge yourself with one delicious escape room experience, it is well worth it!
(ab)Normal #Photowalk
During our CHat we were inspired by Master Lino Sprizzi to commit to an extra Photowalk using only a “normal” field-of-view fixed focal length lens. This activity is free and open to anyone willing to participate.
- Fixed Focal Lenght
- 35mm or 50 mm on a full-frame camera
- 20mm to 35mm on an APS-C crop camera
- Street photography
- Black and White
You can find all the details and RSVP on our Meetup group.
Foto Flohmarkt
As we’ve been discussing for some time already, we will organize a meeting to buy and sell used photo gear. It will happen in the last weekend of October and the details will be posted on our Meetup group.
- When: last weekend of October.
- Venue: CHaya Photo.
- Free to come and enjoy, look around and buy.
- A very tiny fee to sell your things.

She is a phenomenal photographer and has so much to share!

Street Photography Tips
Photowalks anyone? ?
Some of the tips here are extremely basic, but other ideas might inspire some of our members to try something new as we wonder through the streets of Zürich in our free photowalks.
