Capturing the Seasonal Colour Symphony: Autumn’s Photographic Delights in Switzerland
As the vibrant greens and yellows of summer gracefully transition to the warm hues of autumn, a new season unfolds and brings with it a plethora of photographic opportunities. Switzerland, with its breathtaking landscapes and ever-jawbreaking scenery, offers photographers a canvas unlike any other. In this post, we’ll explore how autumn transforms the Swiss landscape and delve into the art of capturing its beauty through landscape photography.
Autumn’s Colours: A Palette of Change
Autumn changes the Swiss landscape with its colourful brush, painting it with a vibrant and spectacular mix of colours. The lush greens give way to a stunning array of warm reds, oranges, and yellows, creating a visual spectacle that is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The crisp air carries the promise of change, and as photographers, we’re almost obliged to dust off our camera gear and register this transformation through our lenses.
Endless Locations to Choose From
Switzerland boasts an array of stunning locations that come alive during autumn. Blausee‘s tranquil lake, surrounded by fiery foliage, offers an idyllic setting for reflective shots. Caumasee, with its crystal waters and colorful forests, beckons photographers seeking natural wonders.
Explore top photographic destinations like the Swiss National Park, Lake Geneva‘s vineyards, and the charming villages of Grindelwald and Zermatt, each offering unique opportunities to frame the beauty of autumn. Or venture the not-so-beaten path and explore the country, you certainly cannot go wrong while travelling around Switzerland and its almost 1500 lakes. What are your favorite spots to photograph and/or hike? I personally was impressed by so many less-known locations like Seealpsee, Klöntalersee, Brienzersee and so many others! (the drone video below was captured at the Klöntalersee).
Challenges and Opportunities: Embracing the Dark Side
As autumn shortens the days and reduces available light, photographers face both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, the extended golden hour time provides more time to capture that special light that adds a special mood and tone to photos. As the warm light casts long shadows during these hours, it adds depth and punch to your images, elevating both viewers’ and creators’ experiences.
On the flip side, less light can pose challenges, especially when photographing during the darker hours. For landscapes this might be easier to mitigate, a stable tripod can lend a hand (or three feet 🙈) and save the day. Even without a three-legged saviour, most modern cameras can produce a decent image by raising the ISO to some previously unthinkable heights. Gone are the days when dust storms would render such images unusable, even if you print them BIG!
If you would also like to explore these solutions and other handy tricks (no, not an iPhone with a magical night mode 😒), we invite you to join the upcoming “Learning Photowalk”. In the search for solutions or even just for fun, we will explore night photography, high ISO, tripod tricks, flash and external lights of different shapes, sources and colours. It’s the perfect opportunity to sharpen your skills and have fun while we shine a light on the darkness of low-light photography.
Mastering Landscape Photography
Landscape photography sounds and feels quite easy but there are many tricks to this trade. Anyone can point and shoot a beautiful image in Switzerland, and this is even more reason to learn the techniques and join the elite that “leaves” the competition behind. To improve from common snapshots to master clicks, mastering a few key techniques is essential. Here are some ideas to elevate your autumn photography game:
- Golden Hour Goodness: With autumn’s arrival, our days may be shorter, but the golden hour works overtime —those magical times shortly after sunrise and before sunset—are longer. Take advantage of the special light that bathes the landscape in a gentle glow, making it ideal for capturing spiced-up scenes.
- Competent Compositions: Pay attention to composition. Use leading lines, foreground interest, and the rule of thirds to create visually appealing photographs. Autumn’s colours provide an excellent backdrop for experimenting with these techniques.
- Mighty Macro: Don’t forget to explore the smaller wonders of autumn. Close-up shots of leaves, dewdrops, or mushrooms can reveal intricate details and textures.
- Long Exposure Super Powers: Try long exposure photography to capture the motion of autumn leaves rustling in the wind or serene reflections on tranquil waters. This technique can also shine a light on seemingly too-dark-too-photograph motives.
- Drama Queens – Filters: Experiment with polarizing filters or colour gels to enhance colours, turn on the sky and control exposure in varying lighting conditions.
These ideas are just a sample of the arsenal at our disposal to make amazing photos, and we will explore them and many others in upcoming workshops and courses. Stay tuned by subscribing to our newsletter and to our Meetup Group.
