Hello everyone!
Read on to discover more about this #photowalk and see the photo gallery below.
Yesterday, we embarked on yet another exciting photo walk around our amazing #Zürich. The cold and wet weather scared the RSVP list more than Halloween itself, and brought the 25 confirmed participants and 36 anxious waiting list members down to a precious 12 photographers. The group was joined by 3 special, weatherproof, gorgeous models, who made our evenings even more beautiful and completed our great group. We had initially planned to walk down the Schanzengraben in Zurich, but lighting conditions made we change our plan and head towards Europaallee to better suit those without external lights (more on the fun we had with those later in this post).
Photo Walk. Wait, Photo What?
Through the Meetup Platform we organize social activities where photographers take pictures of selected places in our stunning Switzerland. I love it particularly because it stimulates photogs to dust off those fantastic gear that sit in a cabinet and engage with the outside world, exploring their creativity and practicing together. You can see many examples from our previous photo walks here on the blog.
One of the main reasons why photo walks are so popular in our group is because they provide an opportunity for photographers to practice their skills, try new things, and learn from others. It’s a chance to stretch your skills, experiment with different techniques, and share your own knowledge and ideas with fellow photographers who are keen on sharing and helping.
Moreover, photo walks are not exclusive to experienced photographers; they can be fun activities for anyone who enjoys taking pictures and being outside. So whether you’re a seasoned professional or a budding enthusiast, a photo walk can be a great way to explore your surroundings, meet like-minded individuals, and most importantly, have fun with photography!
A Change of Scenery
Schanzengraben is an idyllic waterside promenade that lies around 2 meters below street level. It links Zurich Main Station with Lake Zurich and zigzags over a boardwalk and sandstone slabs along the Old Botanical Garden, a great scenario that spiced many of our previous #photowalks. However, due to the early darkness brought by the upcoming winter, we decided to head towards Europaallee instead.
Europaallee, situated immediately next to Zurich Main Train Station, is the newest of the city’s neighbourhoods and a vibrant mix of shopping, culture, restaurants, and bars. It stretches from behind Zurich’s Main Train Station to Langstrasse, offering a diverse range of photo opportunities. We took shelter from the wind in a courtyard along the way, which provided us with some fantastic shots and oodles of fun.
A Big Thank You!
I want to extend my immense gratitude to all who participated in yesterday’s photo walk. Your enthusiasm and creativity truly made the event memorable. A special thank you goes out to our gorgeous models who made our evening even more beautiful:

To all our photographers, don’t forget to treat your best images with a lot of love and send them to the models. Remember, if you don’t, you owe us dinner! 😉
Fun and Creativity with External Lights
Working with external lights like flashes and LED sticks can be an incredibly fun and creative experience. These tools open up a world of photo opportunities, allowing you to manipulate light in ways that can dramatically change the mood and composition of your shots, as well as rescuing us from impossible lighting situations.
There are many types of lights that can be used in photography, such as strobes, flashes, speedlites, and even natural light. Each type of light creates different effects and understanding how to work with these different light sources is one of the biggest challenges of photography.
Learning lighting techniques is crucial to achieving good results and justifying the investments you’ve made in equipment. It’s not just about illuminating your subject; it’s about understanding how light plays off the angles and curves of your subject, which parts are illuminated and which are in darkness. This knowledge allows you to harness your light source in the most effective way for any given composition and project and leads to the most important thing in photography: understanding and deciding what you want to achieve with your photo. Sounds a lot easier and simpler than it is.
So, whether you’re filling in shadows with an on-camera flash, creating dramatic effects with hard lighting, or painting with light using LED sticks, the creative possibilities are endless. And the best part? The more you experiment with different lighting techniques, the more fun it becomes!
