A Photowalk with Spring Vibes at MFO Park
After weeks of the typical crazy April weather, we were gifted a gorgeous spring day – warm, sunny, and pleasant. The MFO Park in Oerlikon was ideal, offering an amazing blend of urban greenery and industrial structures.
The park’s metal installations and staircases provided striking backdrops for portrait photography, while the bustling after-work city life allowed excellent street photography opportunities. The sunset on the rooftop could be a bit better but it was loads of fun anyway.
The MFO Park: A Gem Hidden in Plain Site
Located in Zurich’s Oerlikon district, the MFO Park is a unique public space that combines nature, art, and industrial elements. The park was built upon the former footprint of the Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon (MFO), a historic machine factory, and its design pays homage to the site’s industrial past with its modern, steel trellis structure that serves as a climbing vine haven. This unique feature creates a fascinating juxtaposition against the park’s natural elements, making it a photographer’s paradise.
The park’s centerpiece is the striking “Smog Ring” sculpture by Michael Beutler, a massive steel ring that appears to float above the ground. Other notable installations include the “Windlicht” wind sculpture and the “Schmetterling” butterfly sculpture.
You can read more about the park’s concept and architecture here.
Learning by Doing
I was especially happy to see some students from the Photography FUNdamentals course putting their newly acquired skills to the test at the photo walk. There’s no better way to learn and improve your photography than by getting out there and practising in real-world scenarios. Did you get the message? Well, consider this a friendly nudge to dust off that fancy camera equipment you invested in and use it! Investing in quality gear is one thing, but using it to its full potential is where the magic truly happens.
More Photowalks are on their Way
Stay tuned for details on our upcoming photowalks – As usual, the newsletter subscribers will get the first chance to RSVP before spots fill up again.
If you’re on the waiting list and eager to join, ask me about “VIP tickets”. With a small contribution to the group’s costs, you can skip the line, join the photowalk AND support our group.
